| Manchester, Missouri was originally called Hoardstown after James Hoard, one of the original settlers in the area. After he died in 1825, the town was renamed Manchester. While no one is sure, it is believed to be named after Manchester, England. Manchester is VERY proud of it's 200 year old history and loves to showcase it's historical section, in particular it's City Hall which is known as the Lyceum Building. (In Dec, they decorate the building with carolers on the upper level porch). Built in 1894, the building is on the National Register. Another first for Manchester was their Fire Dept, which had the first fire engine (a Model T Truck which they kept in a stable) in West County. Today Manchester is a thriving community with lots of shopping, great schools (Parkway School District) and wonderful homes. They hold a yearly Manchester Days Celebration for everyone in the community to share in their joy. Manchester has a number of wonderful parks and recreation facilities which have activities throughout the year for the residents. The Manchester Police Dept has a huge community outreach which includes a Citizen's Police Academy to help it's citizens learn about police matters. |
