| Creve Coeur means "Broken Heart" in French. Local lore tells of an Indian Maiden who's heart was broken by a French Fur Trader. She supposedly threw herself off a ledge into Creve Coeur Lake which broke into the shape of a broken heart as she landed in the water, thus giving the area it's name. A wonderful city with great resources, Creve Coeur is considered to be very upscale. As a leader in the "west-ward" movement from the city to the suburbs in the late 50's early 60's, it's also seen as a very forward thinking area with many high-tech companies that call it home. Incorporated in Dec of 1949, the city was started out as less than a square mile with a population of 1,900. Today it is comprised of 11.4 square miles and the city's population at the time of the 2000 Census was over 16,000, with a median income level of $75,032. The main road through Creve Coeur is Olive, at times referred to as Olive Street, at times Olive Road and at time Olive Blvd. To the locals, it's just Olive. Wandering from the riverfront in downtown St Louis out to the area of the Chesterfield Mall where it intersects highway 40/64 in Chesterfield, Olive then turns into Clarkson and continues on to Manchester Road, where it turns into Kiefer Creek and continues it's wandering South. Residents joke that if you can't find what you need on Olive, you probably don't really need it. While the area has grown with the times, there are still a few family farms to be found in the Creve Coeur area. The Parkway School District is responsible for the majority children who reside in Creve Coeur, but the area is also noted for several premier private schools at all age levels and several private universities. Pattonville and Ladue School Districts handle a few of the children who live in Creve Coeur. Creve Coeur has great services for it's residents, it's close to major hospitals, has easy access to highways 40/64, 270, 70 and the Page Ave extension. As a result, it is considered to be a very desirable area of St Louis to live in. Creve Coeur's housing is reflective of this and of the fact that it is considered to be in the "Central Corridor". This makes the land in Creve Coeur among the most valuable in the St Louis area, resulting in higher prices, but also greater amenities.
